Greece is a mountainous country situated in Southern Europe with a 15,021 km (9,334 mi) coastline, almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to its mainland, Greece boasts over 6000 islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which only 227 are inhabited.
Since Mount Olympus National Park was established in 1938, Greece has gone on to proclaim a further 9 national parks, taking the total in the country to 10. Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, rising 9577ft (2919m) above sea level. To the immediate southwest of the peak stands the impressive Meteora rock formations. Greece is also home to a number of volcanoes, though none are currently erupting.
