Jordan is situated on desert plateaus in southeast Asia, and is almost entirely landlocked apart from a tiny piece of coastline on the gulf of Aqaba. The majority of Jordan is flat, as the western edges of the Ard As Sawwan and Syrian deserts stretch across the country. In the west, the Jordan river dissects the Great Rift Valley, which is the only mountainous part of the country.
